The exact composition of these bodies of liquid remained unknown until 2014, when the radar instrument aboard Cassini was first used to show that Ligeia Mare, the second largest sea on Titan, is richly endowed with methane. The "chaos terrains" are those regions of the icy moon that are covered with shattered, scrambled, and rotated chunks of crust the size several city blocks. Galileo images show swirly and very rough-looking material between the broken blocks of ice, which indicates that the blocks may once have been lodged atop a bed of slushy stuff that ultimately froze at the very frigid surface temperatures of Europa.



In July 2017, a team of astronomers announced that they had used satellite data to find--for the first time--signs of widespread water hidden beneath ancient volcanic material on Earth's Moon. The scientists' discovery suggests that the interior of our Moon holds large quantities of indigenous water. This plentiful, but well-hidden water, reveals its secret presence in numerous volcanic deposits, that had been explosively distributed across our Moon's surface when ancient lunar volcanoes erupted. These primordial deposits contain unusually large amounts of imprisoned water compared with nearby terrains. The detection of water within these lunar deposits, is believed to be made up of glass beads that formed as a result of the explosive fiery eruption of magma, hurled out from deep within our Moon. This finding supports the theory that the lunar mantle is surprisingly soggy.



This later-forming time line for lunar birth is reasonable, Dr. William Hartmann noted in the April 2, 2014 National Geographic News. Dr. Hartmann, a researcher at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, was one of the first to propose the giant impact theory of lunar formation. However, he added that the new study might depend too much on the idea of using the last giant impact as a marker for when such events occurred in the history of our planet.
