Like Earth's own large Moon, Triton is locked in synchronous rotation with its planet--one side always faces Neptune. However, because of Neptune's odd orbital inclination, both of the moon's polar regions take turns facing the Sun. Spacecraft images of Triton reveal mounds and round pits formed from icy lava flows (cryovolanism), as well as smooth volcanic plains. The surface of the moon is only sparsely cratered, indicating that its surface is new--that is, it is constantly being resurfaced, probably by the "lava" flow from icy volcanoes. Triton is very bright--its fresh, sparkling, new ice-coating is believed to cover a heart of metal and rock. Triton's high density suggests that it contains more rock in its interior than the icy moons of Saturn and Uranus.

Planetary scientists use orbital spectrometers to measure the light that skips off of a planetary surface. In addition to shedding new light on the lunar water-mystery, the new research could also have important implications for future exploration of Earth's Moon. The volcanic beads do not harbor a lot of water--only about.05 percent by weight--but the deposits are large, and the water could potentially be extracted.
The first observations of Mars as an object traveling in Earth's night sky was recorded by the ancient Egyptian astronomers, and by 1534 BCE the ancient astronomers were familiar with the retrograde movement of the planet. By the time of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, the Babylonian astronomers were making regular records of the positions of the planets, as well as systematic detections of their behavior. In the case of Mars, the ancient astronomers realized that it made 42 circuits of the zodiac every 79 years. These scientists of long ago even invented arithmetic methods so that they could make minor corrections pertaining to the predicted positions of the planets inhabiting our Solar System. The ancient astronomers referred to the planets as "wandering stars".
There are more than 100 moons in orbit around the eight major planets of our Sun's family. Most of them are frozen worlds, primarily composed of ice with a smattering of rocky material, circling the four giant gaseous planets dwelling in the outer regions of our Solar System--Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The inner region of our Solar System is almost completely devoid of moons. Earth's own lovely Moon is the largest one in our inner region of the Sun's family. Of the four rocky and relatively petite inner worlds that circle nearest to our Star--Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars--Mercury and Venus are moonless, while Mars is orbited by two lumpy and misshapen small moons, Phobos and Deimos, that are most likely captured asteroids that originated in the Main Asteroid Belt that orbits our Sun between Mars and Jupiter.
