The inner Solar System is dramatically different from the distant realm of the giant planets. The inner region of our Solar System, where our Earth is situated, is almost entirely moon-less. Of the four relatively small, rocky worlds--Mercury, Venus, our Earth, and Mars--Mercury and Venus are barren of moons, and Mars is orbited by two fascinating, but very small, potato-shaped moons named Phobos and Deimos. The duo of Martian moons are often considered to be captured asteroids that long ago escaped from their birthplace in the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter. According to this scenario, Phobos and Deimos, during their dangerous journey from their original home, were snared by the gravity of their adopted Red Planet when our 4.56 billion-year-old Solar System was young. In the warm and well-lit inner Solar System, only Earth's large Moon is a significant moon-world in its own right.



Dozens of crewless spacecraft, including landers, rovers, and orbiters, have been dispatched to Mars by the Soviet Union, the United States, Europe, and India to observe the planet's climate, surface, and geology. Since the year 2000, cameras circling in orbit around Mars have sent back to Earth a treasure chest overflowing with revealing pictures of the "fire star." These wonderful images have displayed a Martian surface etched with small valleys and carved into slopes. These features are eerily similar in their shape to gullies carved by gushing water flowing on Earth. The Martian gullies are believed to be less than a few million years old--a tiny wink of the eye on geological time scales. In fact, some of the gullies even appear to be younger than that! These detections are enticing. This is because the observations hint to planetary scientists that great quantities of liquid water may still be lingering on Mars at present--and that this gushing water might be what carved out the gullies.



"I think the best thing about this work is that they explain this link between the mass of the moon and the orbital distance, which was known before but not understood," said planetary scientist, Dr. David Nesvorny, in the November 29, 2012 Scientific American. Dr. Nesvorny, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, who did not contribute to the new research, added that "If you had asked me a few years ago, I would think of our Moon's formation and the formation of the satellites of the outer planets differently. This puts things on common ground."
