With such intriguing results before them, the team of astronomers studied the data to determine if Kepler-22b actually has a moon. Unfortunately, their analysis reveals no evidence for the existence of an exomoon circling Kepler-22b. This non-detection suggests that the mass of any companion world around Kepler-22b must be less than 0.54 times the mass of our planet--with an impressive confidence rate of 95%! Therefore, it is very unlikely that Kepler-22b is circled by an Earth-like moon. Nevertheless, it is still too soon to give up hope. The Hunt for Exomoons with Kepler project has studied nine planetary systems in search of exomoons. Although none were detected, with the team's new results about the possibility of finding Earth-sized moons and the remaining treasure trove of Kepler data to sift through, large and possibly even habitable exomoons may start being spotted in the near future.

The exact composition of these bodies of liquid remained unknown until 2014, when the radar instrument aboard Cassini was first used to show that Ligeia Mare, the second largest sea on Titan, is richly endowed with methane. Ligeia Mare is similar in size to two of the Great Lakes on Earth combined--Lake Huron and Lake Michigan! The new study, published in the February 25, 2016 issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, which used the radar instrument in a different mode, independently confirmed the 2014 result. "It's a marvelous feat of exploration that we're doing extraterrestrial oceanography on an alien moon," commented Dr. Steve Wall in an April 26, 2016 Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Press Release. Dr. Wall, who is of the JPL in Pasadena, California, is Cassini radar team deputy lead.



Several theories have been around for a long time that have attempted to explain how Earth's Moon was born. The first theory suggests that the Moon was once part of Earth, and that it somehow budded off about 4.5 billion years ago. According to this theory, the Pacific Ocean basin is the most likely site for where this occurred. A second theory postulates that the interaction of Sun-orbiting and Earth-orbiting planetesimals (the ancient building-blocks of planets), in the early years of our Solar System, caused them to disintegrate. Earth's Moon then coalesced out of the shattered debris of the pulverized planetesimals. A third theory proposes that the Earth and Moon were born together out of the original nebula that gave rise to our Solar System, and a fourth theory suggests that the Moon was really born somewhere else in our Solar System, and was ultimately captured by Earth's gravity when it traveled too close.
