Of the four terrestrial, rocky planets of the inner Solar System (Mercury, Venus, our Earth, and Mars), both Mercury and Venus are moonless. Earth possesses one lone Moon, but it is a very large one--the fifth largest moon in our entire Solar System, in fact. Mars, on the other hand, has two tiny misshapen moons that resemble rocky potatoes, and are lumpy and dark, as they travel in their nearly circular orbits close to the plane of the Martian equator. The Martian moons, Phobos and Deimos, are probably asteroids that were captured by Mars long ago.
How am I so sure of this? Simple. Because I've personally been using the moon to my advantage for more than 20 years, and know how effective it is. Have you ever had one of those epic days fishing where it seemed like no matter what you threw in the water, you caught fish? If you have, it was more than likely due to the fact that the moon was in a certain phase, rather than your skills as an angler (I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but it's true).

"The distribution of these water-rich deposits is the key thing. They're spread across the surface, which tells us that the water found in the Apollo samples isn't a one-off. Lunar pyroclastics seem to be universally water-rich, which suggests the same may be true of the mantle," Dr. Milliken continued to explain in the Brown University Press Release.
When a moon is in an orbit around its parent-planet, all is well--just as long as the gravity that is holding the moon together in one piece exceeds the powerful, relentless pull of its planet. Alas, if a moon wanders too close, and the tidal forces of the parent-planet exceed the gravitational bind of the unlucky moon, the moon will fall apart. This is termed the Roche limit. Earth's relatively large Moon is a very fortunate natural satellite, and the limit here is a bit under 10,000 kilometers--while our Moon is a safe 385,000 kilometers away from our planet.
The new study was published in the April 3, 2014 issue of the journal Nature, and it may provide a solution to a long-standing mystery of lunar origins pertaining to why Earth and its lovely companion appear to sport virtually identical compositions.
