With the discoveries of 132 confirmed extrasolar planets and more than three thousand planet candidates, the Kepler mission revolutionized scientific understanding of planets residing beyond our own Star. Much of the attention surrounding these discoveries has focused on identifying an Earth-analog--a planet about the size of our own world dwelling within the precious Goldilocks zone around its distant star. Now, for the first time, Dr. David M. Kipping of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his team, have started to hunt for a habitable moon around Kepler-22b!
However, the fact of the matter is that moon will always remain the best option for mankind. The reason for this stems from the fact that the moon can always act as a stepping stone to the rest of the solar system and beyond. This is only natural, as the moon is in a very close proximity to Earth. Only by taking a 3 day trip, it is possible to reach the Moon with standard chemical propulsion techniques. However, in retrospect, going to Mars would require almost 100 times the amount of trip time of moon, since Mars is about 1000 times further then the moon. The amount of life support that is required for a mission that will take 2 years or more is definitely very costly and more importantly, the technological capability is not there. Thus, with our present global financial and technical capability, the moon is the only realistic option.
If this ancient catastrophic impact really did occur, there should be deposits of these tragic moons on the Martian surface. The Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is currently planning a sample return mission to Phobos and Deimos, the Martian Moons Explorer, and NASA has plans to eventually return samples to Earth from the surface of Mars-- perhaps as soon as the 2020s. At the conclusion of their paper, the authors note, "Our scenario provides further motivation for a sample return mission to the Martian satellites."
