Our third theory to discuss is the "Co-Formation Theory" which alleges that the Moon and Earth were formed within the nebular disk around the Earth (similar to how our solar system formed around the Sun). This theory falls short when one revisits the composition of the Earth and Moon. If the Moon did indeed share some of the same building material as the Earth did and form in the same area, it should be very similar in composition to the Earth. We've seen, however, that the Moon doesn't share a significant iron core like our home planet does. There is one theory which remains to be discussed, and it is the one that is widely accepted today. The Giant Impactor Theory: The Giant Impactor Theory claims that the Moon was formed when an object the size of Mars slammed into the Earth shortly after the solar system's formation. After this object hit the Earth, tons of material from both the object and the Earth were sent into space and began to orbit around the Earth. This material slowly began to come together and collide until what we see as our Moon was created. This theory most easily explains the criteria we previously mentioned. The heat that would have been generated after the collision explains the evidence of "baking" on the Moon's surface. It also supports the fact that the Moon doesn't have a large iron core like the Earth. Finally, we have seen evidence of other such collisions in other parts of the solar system.

Dr. Lieber and his colleagues did a study to test the theory of full-moon "lunacy". They studied data on murders in Dade County of Florida which covered 15 years and a total of 1,887 deaths by homicide. When they compared the deaths with the phases of the moon, they found that the two rose and fell together for the entire 15 years! With the approach of a full or new moon, there was a sharp spike in the murder rate, and then a decline during the first and last quarters of the moon.
During the entire Apollo program, the Soviet Union closely monitored all the transmissions of the astronauts. They would have been absolutely delighted to find it was a hoax. It would have been the greatest propaganda coup of all time. But apparently, the Soviets also didn't find any solid evidence of faked moon landings.

On the morning of the full-moon day that is celebrated by Burmese Buddhists as the full-moon of Kason, Siddhartha Gautama, the son of the head of the Indian 'Sakya' warrior caste (which accounts for the name 'Sakyamuni', 'Sage of the Sakya', a name Siddhartha Gautama was also known by) sat under a Bo tree near Gaya (now Buddha Gaya in the north-eastern Indian state of Bihar) south of Patna (present-day Bihar's capital) when he had his 'Great Enlightenment' that revealed to him the way of salvation from suffering. This he tried to find for many years by looking for as he is said to have put it: "Who wrought these prisons of senses, sorrow, fraught."
Discovering the water content of volcanic deposits on our Moon using orbital instruments presents quite a challenge. Planetary scientists use orbital spectrometers to measure the light that skips off of a planetary surface. By determining which electromagnetic wavelengths of light are reflected or absorbed by the surface, the scientists can then get an idea of which minerals and other compounds are present.
There is an important distinction between the way giant planet systems form--such as those belonging to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune--and the way that the rocky planets such as Earth, and the dwarf planet, Pluto, take shape. The gaseous giant planets are surrounded by rings, a myriad of moons, and a vast number of tiny dancing moonlets, whereas the rocky planets have none, or only one moon, and no rings to be seen. Until this new model was developed, two scenarios were generally used to explain how the regular moons of our Solar System were born. These two commonly used explanations suggest that the moons of Earth and Pluto came into being following catastrophic impacts. They further suggest that the moons of the giant, outer planets were born in a nebula floating around the newborn gigantic planet. They fail, however, to explain the distribution and chemical composition of the moons circling the gigantic outer four. Something, therefore, up until now, has been missing.
