In their research, the planetary scientists combined several radar observations of heat given off by Ligeia Mare. They also studied data collected from a 2013 experiment that bounced radio signals off Ligeia Mare. The relatively light regions of the Moon are known as the highlands. The dark features, the lunar maria, are impact basins that were later filled with lava between 4.2 and 1.2 million years ago. These light and dark regions were created by rocks of different ages and compositions. This provides evidence for how the ancient crust may have crystallized from a global lunar ocean of magma. The impact craters have been preserved for billions of years, and they provide observers with an impact history for our Moon and other bodies that inhabit the inner Solar System.
Dozens of crewless spacecraft, including landers, rovers, and orbiters, have been dispatched to Mars by the Soviet Union, the United States, Europe, and India to observe the planet's climate, surface, and geology. Since the year 2000, cameras circling in orbit around Mars have sent back to Earth a treasure chest overflowing with revealing pictures of the "fire star." These wonderful images have displayed a Martian surface etched with small valleys and carved into slopes. These features are eerily similar in their shape to gullies carved by gushing water flowing on Earth. The Martian gullies are believed to be less than a few million years old--a tiny wink of the eye on geological time scales. In fact, some of the gullies even appear to be younger than that! These detections are enticing. This is because the observations hint to planetary scientists that great quantities of liquid water may still be lingering on Mars at present--and that this gushing water might be what carved out the gullies.
Two French astrophysicists, proposing the new, alternative scenario explaining moon-birth, reported their findings in a paper titled: Formation of Regular Satellites from Ancient Massive Rings in the Solar System, published in the November 30, 2012 issue of the journal Science. Dr. Aurelien Crida, an astrophysicist at the University of Nice--Sophia Antipolis and the Observatory of Cote d'Azur in France, explained in the November 29, 2012 issue of Scientific American that "It's fundamentally the same process that gave birth to the Moon and to the satellites of the giant planets, and that's the spreading of rings." Dr. Crida is a co-author of the study with Dr. Sebastien Charnoz of the University of Paris--Diderot.
